The 2021/2022 Big Wave Season Is Officially Open

The holding period for World Surf League (WSL) 2021/2022 Big Wave season has finally opened. The competitions for the said season will last until March 31, 2022.

Among the exciting features of the big wave season are the Quiksilver “Jaws” Big Wave Challenge in Pe’ahi, Maui and the Nazare Tow Surfing Challenge to be presented by Jogos Santa Casa. Both of these events will showcase the best in terms of big wave surfing in the paddle as well as tow-in disciplines.

Quiksilver “Jaws” Big Wave Challenge

A paddle-in surfing will be featured in this event in an individual competition format at Pe’ahi, Maui where 24 competitors will go through 4 heats of six surfers in the first round.

Heats are at 45 minutes each with surfers given the opportunity to catch as many waves as possible with a panel of 5 judges to score each ride on a scale of 1-10.

Invitees come from different countries, including Australia, Brazil, France, Great Britain, Hawaii, and Italy, among others.

In this case, the 2 best waves will be counted and the best wave scored will be doubled. The ones to advance to the semifinals will be the 3 top-scoring surfers to run the same format, where the top 3 surfers from the semis will compete in the finals.

Nazare Tow Surfing Challenge

This will be a one-day event to be presented by Jogos Santa Casa will feature specialty teams participating in the tow-in surfing challenge. A total of 9 teams will join with 2 competitors in every team.

There will be monitoring of swell-producing storms by event officials where the precise conditions to produce waves are taken into consideration within the range of the competition.

A notice will be made by event officials within 72 hours to prepare for the competition after the call has been made. However, there will be no location intended for onsite spectators due to environmental and safety concerns.

At the same time, there will be no location available for non-residents anywhere near the location of the event during the day of the surfing competition.
