How to Keep Warm Before and During a Dive

Naturally, you won’t have fun when you are feeling cold before and during a dive. In addition, it can make your dive dangerous because when your body temperature is declining, it will take more time for your brain to process things. So, your reaction/s to crucial situations while below the water may become delayed too. More energy is also needed by the body to keep itself warm so instead of preserving that energy for higher endurance, you will have to shorten your diving time as well.

To ensure that your body is in its ideal temperature for a dive, here are some tips to help you out.

Get the right wetsuit

It might be very obvious to seasoned divers but we can’t express how important it is to choose the correct wetsuit in making your body warm. Having the appropriate type of wetsuit such as full body long sleeves or just a thin shorty can make or break your dive.

Consider the location, weather, and other specific conditions of the diving site and pick the kind of wetsuit accordingly. Think of the level of heat you’ll need since a wetsuit that is too thick can lead to overheat. Above all, make sure that it fits perfectly so that you won’t find yourself getting cold faster than expected. Plus, you are also more comfortable with your movements with a well-fitting wetsuit.

Put on a hood

The same with skiing, you also need to protect your head from the cold while in the water. Our whole body may already be covered, but the head should not be taken for granted. In fact, near-surface blood vessels in the body minimize heat loss by closing down, but those in the head still continues to flow fully. Opt for a wetsuit hood that has a long neck so that you can tuck in your wetsuit and you will be able to reduce the amount of exposed skin.

Be warm on land

Be properly warm even when you are still heading for a dive or when waiting for the time to dive. You have to wear warm clothes which may include a scarf and beanie while on land so that your body is at warm temperature before hitting the water. Also wear a windbreaker because it will help you avoid wind chill especially at surface intervals and when you finish your dive.
